Voluntary Resignation
An institution may resign its accreditation or candidacy with HLC, or withdraw from seeking membership with HLC, at any time. Institutions may choose to take such actions for any reason, including closing or ceasing operations, merging with another institution or changing accreditors.
Voluntary Resignation of Accreditation or Candidacy
Institutions considering voluntary resignation of accreditation or candidacy are encouraged to communicate with their HLC staff liaison as soon as possible.
To resign its accreditation or candidacy, an institution submits the Voluntary Resignation Form. A voluntary resignation is irrevocable once accepted by HLC.
Institutions must continue to meet HLC’s Obligations of Membership until the resignation takes effect.
Voluntary Withdrawal of Application for HLC Membership
An institution may voluntarily withdraw from seeking membership with HLC at any time before it is granted candidacy or initial accreditation. To withdraw its application for membership, and institution should notify HLC at [email protected].
Reapplying for HLC Membership
If an institution wishes to become an HLC member after a voluntary resignation or withdrawal, it must begin the process of seeking accreditation again. Depending on the circumstances, certain waiting periods may apply before the institution may start the process.
