2022–23 Federal Compliance Materials Available
HLC has published new Federal Compliance materials for institutions and peer reviewers that reflect recent changes to HLC policies. The updated documents should be used for evaluations involving Federal Compliance Reviews that take place on or after September 1, 2022.
The materials include:
- Federal Compliance Overview
- Federal Compliance Filing for Institutions
- Instructions for Federal Compliance Reviewers and Evaluation Teams
The previous versions of these documents remain available for any Federal Compliance Reviews that will take place before September 1.
2022–23 Updates
Institutions will be asked to provide additional information related to two areas of federal compliance:
- Information that demonstrates the institution protects student privacy, particularly as it relates to data privacy and security (including student records), transparency with constituents related to data collection and use, and training of employees and any third parties acting on the institution’s behalf. This requirement is related to a proposed policy change that HLC’s Board of Trustees will consider for adoption on second reading at its meeting on June 23–24, 2022.
- Information that demonstrates that they are in compliance with HLC policy Recruiting, Admissions, and Related Institutional Practices (CRRT.C.10.010).
In addition, institutions should be aware that HLC’s Board updated policies related to the evaluation of Federal Compliance requirements in February 2022. The policy changes clarified that an institution can be (but is not required to be) placed on Probation, subject to a Show-Cause Order or subject to an adverse action for being out of compliance with a single Federal Compliance Requirement, even if it is otherwise in compliance with the Criteria for Accreditation. Institutions should review HLC policy Federal Compliance Requirements (FDCR.A.10.010) for more information.
