Trend Alert: Finance
Changing banking practices and the end of federal and state pandemic support are proving too much for some colleges and universities. For years, experts have been forecasting the decline in enrollments and warning that it is unlikely to cycle back up. In addition, the pandemic support is ending as we knew it would someday. The unexpected addition of abruptly changing banking practices in response to the Silicon Valley Bank demise has put additional restrictions on funds available in rural communities. Added to this are the rising interest rates and inflation.
To help institutions find ways to cope with financial pressures in higher education, HLC offers these resources within the higher education industry:
National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) provides publications and professional development on risk management.
Association of Governing Boards (AGB) provides a knowledge center with resources on finance and business models, mergers and affiliations and risk management.
The Registry provides resources on building strength and sustainability related to finances.
Each year, HLC’s President Barbara Gellman-Danley identifies the trends that impact the higher education ecosystem. Read the 2023 Trends.
