Get To Know HLC Staff Member Heather Berg
Heather Berg is HLC’s vice president of communications and engagement, a contributor and often the final eye on most HLC materials you see. She understands the accreditation process well and has great appreciation for its self-evaluation, peer evaluation and objective judgment structure.
1. When and how did you first learn about accreditation?
When I did my research to apply to work at HLC. I was familiar with higher education, but the rigor and improvement built into accreditation was a new area.
2. How do you explain your work with HLC to people who aren’t familiar with accreditation, in 10 words or less?
I write about quality assurance at colleges and universities.
3. Why did you want to get involved with HLC?
I believe in the common good of higher education. Previously I had worked at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), and the Higher Learning Commission opportunity was a very good fit for me.
4. What aspects of your background have been particularly helpful in your work with HLC?
Being a consumer of higher education has helped me reflect on the ways we communicate about accreditation. It is a complex process, but it is built on a structure that is very clear to me, which is self-evaluation, peer evaluation, and objective judgment. I like the fairness of due process and the value that can be gleaned from looking at the big picture.
5. What have you learned from working with HLC that’s been beneficial to you?
I often marvel at the different missions that are under the umbrella of higher education. The variety and opportunities available for learners demonstrates to me that lifelong learning is possible.
6. What has been one of your most memorable experiences working with HLC?
Honestly, it’s growth. HLC has doubled its staff count since I started in 2009. Higher education has changed and evolved, as has HLC. Every day poses new challenges and opportunities, and we continue to meet them.
7. What do you like to do outside of the office?
I make stained glass, travel, follow professional football and baseball, read fiction and spend time with family.
8. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A veterinarian. I love dogs and horses!
9. What is your greatest career or life achievement so far?
Completing the New York Times crossword puzzle most days. No, really my greatest career achievement so far is the amazing relationships that I have fostered. When I step back from the daily tasks, I see that we are always trying to help each other and the end result is a better outcome.
10. What’s your favorite part of being a member of the HLC community?
The HLC community is made up of smart, caring, generous people, and I am happy to be among them!
